Is registration of marriage compulsory?

Asked by Kannan on 13-06-2026 01:00 PM
Question:
Our marriage was conducted according to Hindu customs, but it has not yet been registered. Can we register it now?
Answer:
A marriage performed according to the Hindu personal law may generally be registered by submitting the prescribed application and supporting documents before the Sub - Registrar. Commonly required documents include proof of identity, proof of age, address proof, marriage photographs, invitation card, proof of ceremony and witness documents. Delayed registration may require an additional fee.
